Aren't you a tall glass of water?

Slick and sleek, masculine modern landscapes are ordered and cohesive

Taking advantage of contrasts and the use of clean lines, these strong, simple spaces are superbly intentionally balanced

For a modern landscape design to be successful, plants, colours, and materials should be chosen with a clear point of view. The juxtaposition between hard and soft elements works well when you have a clear direction from the beginning

The simple plantings and layered, linear beds in a modern landscape take the beauty of the natural world and organize it into something predictable and clean

THE VIBE

Start by laying out where you want your hardscape (the patios, decks, trellises, paths, walkways, etc) to be in your landscape

Modern landscapes tend to focus heavily on paved, concrete and tiled areas, so it is important to get these design elements done first, in functionality and form

A neutral, masculine colour palette of cool gray tones and the colour-blocking of accents keeps the look sophisticated and streamlined

There is a simple geometry with built-in seating and dining elements in cubes, squares and rectangles

FEATURES

Materials: Use natural materials such as wood and rock, whenever possible, balanced by smooth polished concrete. Including light-toned wood will bring a relaxed warmth to low, simple outdoor sectionals and looks great off-set by glass tables

Planting: Rows of columnar hedgerow plants provide a modern backdrop for shorter plants with more organic forms. Airy trees and/or grasses, should have an emphasis on height and structure and should be evenly-spaced to create order

Elements: Stay simple but smart with covertly-hidden storage and subtle lighting in chrome or nickel finishes that are smart but often forgotten touches. Pairing a smooth weather-proof sofa with a chunky knit throw introduces layers of comfort without disrupting the simplicity of the palette

Containers: Sharp angles and straight lines without complicated patterns or too much colour and/or texture are key modern decor elements

SUMMARY

Keep it clean. Revisit your plan to make sure you’re being as streamlined as possible with clear definition.

Repetition is of high priority in a modern masculine landscape design as almost any plant can work if it is repeated and uniformly planted.

Mid-modern landscape designs should have a balance of strong, clean lines and straight edges especially if next to freer elements, such as billowing grasses.

Find balance in contrasting textures - where simple lines and natural elements come together effortlessly. Layer in dramatic and bold elements with either plants or hardscapes by using opposite shapes, sizes, and textures.
